I've read several places that the trainability of a beagle is almost
0.
It's an out and out falsehood!
My beagle mix had me trained within no time.
She has me trained to know when she wants to go to bed. Which means
I have to carry her
and put her in bed, she never has gone to bed by herself. Nor has she
ever fallen asleep anywhere
but her crate. She only sleeps in her crate with the door latched.
I've tried to leave it open a couple
of times and even ajar too, but she came into the livingroom and went
ballistic on me and I learned
real quick not to ever leave her door unlatched again.
When Penny was 2 years old she discovered the delights of sleeping in
bed.
Quickly, she trained us to make room for her between us.
As for intelligence, this girl is way off the top, she figured out that
the longer she took to leash
train, the longer she got to have someone tote and carry her during
rain or over dewy grass.
By her 12th week, she figured out that every time she went outside
to go potty that she got a snack.
So, with tiny brain cells a forming, she did the math & figured
out a way to get 2 snacks instead of one.
She goes out to pee & then dawdles a bit, we come in, she gets
a snack & then 15 minutes later
She asks to go back outside & she does her constitutional &
comes back in & gets another snack.
She learned to sit in a heartbeat because usually after sitting down,
she gets a snack.
But sometimes she just gets a pat on the head.
Well, again, out came the puppy calculator. She did the math &
figured if she takes longer to
train at something, the longer time she'll get snacks while learning
it. She added it all up and
concluded that potty training should be drawn out for months instead
of weeks to store up
some body fat for any snackless times ahead after she learns to go
potty outside all the time.
Reverse fetch is a favorite game that she trained us humans to play.
She'll lay beside us chewing on a toy, then she drops it on the floor
and then barks her
commanding beagle bark for us to pick it up. With ringing ears,
we humans pick that
toy up and give it back to her just as fast as possible to quiet her.
