~established circa 1996~ ~ Back to 'Pixiegrins' Main Homepage ~ ~and so the journey of Pixiegrins begins~ Circa early/mid 1996, The first website I opened didn't have a particular name, it was just 'my website'. Opening an account with webhost #1 and then actually building my website was one of the most bravest things I had ever done. I was putting my thoughts on display for the world to read, it felt wonderful and down right scary. I built quite a few send-pages of funny things, sentiments and nonsense. I wanted so much to spread some positive sentiments to folks who may need a smile or warm thought to share. I began creating a few simple backgrounds & graphics of my own. I was off and running. I loved the virtual postcards that my family and I sent each other. I dreamed of one day being smart enough and having resources enough to have my own virtual postcard site, but I didn't seriously think that it would ever happen until I discovered mypostcards.com. They offer free virtual postie sites. I was in 7th heaven. I pondered for awhile on what name to give my new postcard site. I knew I needed a catchy name that was fun and friendly. In my youth my dear sweet Aunt nicknamed me Pixie. It was such a happy feeling nickname that I decided to have Pixie as part of the name for my website. I needed a second part of the name because there were so many Pixie names on the net already that I wanted mine to be distinguished as much as possible. I tried different phrases & words to go with it, but none seemed to fit. One day, my husband & I were reminiscing about the first time we met, I told him that I would never forget the mischievous grin he had that day. Our son has that same grin, it's most adorable and cute. A light went off in my head and the name Pixiegrins was born. It was perfect sounding to me, fun, friendly and distinguished. (And in the year 2000 our grandson was born with that same adorable grin.) Webhost #1 wasn't really suited for me to host a postcard site so I moved my website to Webhost #2. At that time, mypostcards.com only allowed one page of cards for free post card sites. I loved having the postcard page even so. I was happy with webhost #2 even though there was quite a bit of down time. After a short time, webhost #2 decided to close down and so ended my hosting with them. But to webhost #2's credit, they sent me an url to go to pick up my website and thankfully I didn't lose any of my website data. Webhost #3, During my time with webhost #3, Pixiegrins really grew. I added tributes, pets, poetry, coloring and other stuff. A wonderful thing happened, mypostcards.com began allowing for free postcard sites to have multiple pages. I became quite good at creating cards. Pixiegrins postcard site blossomed with tons of users. I finally had to delete most of coloring section to allow more space for my cards (well really it had to do more with a thief stealing mine and many other folks coloring pictures and selling them on disk... but that is another story.) My
guestbook brimmed with many pages of entries from visitors who enjoyed
my website and shared their heartfelt thoughts with me.
It was exhilarating to share such a special connection with so many people
around the world. Then the spammers hit my guestbook,
I couldn't keep the trash entries cleaned out faster then they could post.
I was worried sick that a child might stumbled upon the adult-oriented
links and so with a sad heart I deleted my guestbooks. This
is one of the most heartbreaking things that I've had to do. I
miss contact with my visitors. It always gave me a lift of
encouragement to know that I had touched someone's heart with a smile or
thought. To hopefully spread a little cheer to people is the reason
I built my website in the first place.
Webhost #4 was a real short stay for my main Pixiegrins website. Webhost #4 became swamped with hundreds of postcard sites moving from Webhost #3 and it overwhelmed their servers. They had to stop allowing postcard sites and Pixiegrins had to move again. (I did however, keep a small member website there until they stopped allowing those too.) Webhost
#5 was my first paid-for website with a domain name. I was
tickled pink to finally be able to have Pixiegrins become a bonafide domain
name, pixiegrins.com. It was ever so exciting. I learned much
about ftp and several other cool little things that came along with my
paid account, but I wasn't happy with Webhost #5. I lasted
a short while and then gave up on them.
Webhost #6 was a free site and it offered everything I needed to house my site and run my postcard site. Shortly after moving to them, they offered 'lifetime accounts' for a really reasonable price, so I jumped on that opportunity. I got too comfortable with them. After a year or so, I stopped backing up my websites to hard drive. I had this goofy idea that my account was really for a 'lifetime' and as I hadn't had a moments trouble at that time, I was lax in my judgments. All good things must come to an end... and it did end after 3 or 4 years, without warning in summer of 2007, Webhost #6 disappeared totally... all files, html docs, graphics, everything is just gone... me and thousands like me are still stunned at the silence. I have never received a reply to my emails as to why Webhost #6 disappeared. I'll spare you my frustrations and just say that I did learn a valuable lesson and from now on I will keep my entire website backed up on my hard drive and on disk... Webhost
#7 Oct. 2007. I re-opened Pixiegrins, I decided to add all my coloring
pictures & cards. I have created hundreds of coloring pictures
and coloring cards and I want children to be able to have access to them.
For years, I've had the coloring pictures on a cd sitting quietly in my
disk box and it occurred to me that unless they are posted on my website,
they can't be of fun to anyone. The coloring pictures and cards
were the first and most important things that I posted on this new website.
Unfortunately, in summer 2007, a virus hit the virtual postcard world causing folks to fear opening virtual cards. I have decided that until the 'powers that be' get control of the virus postcard situation, that I'm not going open re-open my postcard shop back up. ~sigh~ so the bad guys wins again... Webhost
#8, January 2008. I registered this domain name as honeyoaks.org.
It was completely processed and privatized in less than a couple hours!
Wow! That never happened before.
Ever so slowly my website is taking shape again. I'm
hoping that 8 is a lucky number for Pixiegrins and
